The Festive Bits at Altitude Christmas!
As well as our usual evenings of amazing comedy and nights spent partying, Altitude Christmas going to be a very different festival with new experiences, new venues, new shows, new slopes and of course new acts (and old) as we ‘explore Austria’ and celebrate a traditional Austrian Christmas.
1. Guaranteed Snow at the Hintertux Glacier!
If you’re a seasoned skier or boarded and worried about the snow…IT’S SNOW PROBLEM! Altitude is putting on regular buses for festival-goers to Austria’s only year-round ski resort, The Hintertux Glacier, which is just up the road. As well as astonishing views and amazing restaurants, the Hintertux Glacier offers winter sports enthusiasts perfect, snow-sure runs 365 days of the year and over 60km of runs suitable for all levels from beginner to pro. 2. Advent in the Forest
We are incredibly excited to reveal that there will also be an enchanted forest – Advent in the Forest is filled with beautifully decorated stalls where you can enjoy healthy organic tea, organic wine, organic spices as well as natural products made by local farmers such as smoked sausage, farmhouse bread cheese and much more. Handicrafts & accessories made from natural materials, tempting local treats such as “Groiggn” (warm pork scratchings), sweet and savoury Zillertal donuts, bacon, liqueurs, schnapps, jewellery, knitwear, “Doggeln” (handmade felt slippers). Refreshments are naturally catered for, with local businesses providing a choice of traditional food and drink from the Zillertal Valley.
The forest will host musical performances by brass bands, heritage groups, choirs, carol singers and an open fireplace in the middle of the Forest Festival Area, allowing you to ignite your festive spirit whilst sitting by an open fire and listening to Austrian Christmas music. 3. The Original Silent Disco on Ice!
The Original Silent Disco are throwing two electrifying parties at Altitude…The first is a Silent Disco ON ICE! We are shaking with excitement to ice-skate (and fall over) to all our favourite tunes. The second event they’re hosting looks to become the Highest Silent Disco ever – taking place at 3250m on top of the Hintertux Glacier!
4. The Festival of Lights
To celebrate the festive season, Altitude will be creating #LightUpMayrhofen. Out of a couple of tons of steel and metal, Altitude will produce a dazzling Festival of Lights. For one night only we will be artistically reinventing a magical path beginning at the Penken Lift, transforming it with fire, stunning fountains of water, hanging drops of light, symbolic Hot Heads and a mini fire-lit bandstand which will run the length of the street. The local shops, businesses and cafes will open up to reveal local artists in residence for the night. The stunning, illuminated path leads from the Enchanted Schellung Forest to the town of Mayrhofen with bewitching lights. There will even be free Austrian snacks, mugs of hot Gluvine and traditional choirs to warm your Christmas cockles.
And there’s so much else you can choose to do in and around Mayrhofen!
You can explore a natural ice palace at the Hintertux Glacier – a wonderful world deep beneath the ski slopes hiding magical ice structures, giant sparkling crystals, frozen waterfalls and even glacial lakes. For more information, click here
The Zillertal Dairy is a traditional family-owned business where visitors are able to view the cheese making process through windows as part of their visit. Tirol’s first show cheese dairy provides you with the chance to look in on the 6,000 square meter making areas and follow the process from start to finish. All of the milk comes from animals allowed to roam verdant pastures at their leisure, choosing the foods they want to eat, and thereby obtaining the healthiest possible balance of nutrients. You can buy cheese and finest milk produce direct from the shop at the dairy. For more information click here
The Stiegenhaushof Schnapps Brewery offers the chance to not only see the Zillertal culture, but also taste it! In the cozy atmosphere of Stiegenhaushof, you can sample award-winning brandies and liqueurs and find out how it’s made. Find out more info here
If you’re feeling brave then why not Paraglide over the Zillertal mountains. Enjoy the most breathtaking views from a bird-eye view. You can even order champagne to enjoy during your flight! For more information, click here
