This time next Tuesday we’ll be heading to Altitude favourite Steakhouse Cafe Tirol to take advantage of the wifi and to nurse our hangovers with a delicious coffee and traditional Tyrolean Gröstl. (If you haven’t tried this before we can’t recommend it enough!)
Then we’ll grab our skis/boards and head up the Penken lift for a morning on the slopes! If you’re a pro (and brave) you might want to tackle the steepest piste in Austria – the Harakiri, which has a 78% gradient! It is not for the fainthearted, as you can see in the footage below…
There are tonnes of beautifully groomed blue and red runs for beginners and intermediate skiers on the Penken, with incredible views and great bars all the way down (how else are we supposed to keep warm?).
If you’re an absolute beginner then next Tuesday might be the perfect morning to have a lesson – as if you find you absolutely love it then you still have a couple of more chances to get up the mountain again before the end of the week.
At 2pm we’ll meet at the Penken’s famous Pilzbar (pictured), which is easily reachable on foot from the main ski lift for those without skis or boards. There we will grab a beer or some glühwein and listen to the legendary Eddie the Eagle telling his epic story of flying against-all-odds and turning failure into success, and showing what’s possible when you dare to follow your dream.
Then we will head down the mountain together and warm up in The Strass Sports Lounge for the utterly brilliant Abandoman’s full 60 minute show! Anyone who hasn’t seen them is in for an absolute treat, as they are always named as one of the highlights of the week at Altitude and all the other festivals they play at around the world! Not to be missed!
We are so excited for this next bit – after the apres-ski session at 7pm we will head over to the Mayrhofen ice rink for the first ever time at Altitude – for the Silent Disco on Ice! What could be more fun than ice skating with your friends, except ice skating with the added thrill (and distraction…) of a Silent Disco! Don’t worry we expect to spend most of our time clinging on to the sides for dear life too…don’t forget to bring your cameras to capture all your friends embarassing falls.
After we have discoed and skated our little Christmas stockings off, we will then head for some dinner, maybe grabbing one of Funky’s famous pizzas or having a sit down meal at Mannis (be sure to try the french onion soup, it’s out of this world!)
By 9.30pm we will be nestled into the Europahaus for the second Evening Show of the week – in the very capable hands of your MC Markus Birdman. He’ll be joined by the marvelous Zoe Lyons who’ll be delivering even more side-splitting material, we’ll be treated tothe first set of the week from Altitude’s favourite muggle Daniel Sloss and even more brilliance from the amazing Andy Askins. Then for the final time of the week at Altitude Christmas, the hilarious Jimeoin will be bringing the ‘best eyebrows in the business’ to the stage to sleigh you in the aisles.
We’ve got an early start on Wednesday but that never stopped anyone at Altitude so we’ll probably see you at 2am in Mike’s Sports Bar!
